Experience the Ultimate Belize Adventure on our Belize Zoo Tour and Blue Hole Cenote
Looking for a fun and educational day trip from Hopkins or Placencia? The Belize Zoo and inland Blue Hole are a must-visit! This zoo is home to over 170 Belizean animals, offering a unique opportunity to get up close with some of the country's most iconic wildlife with refreshing cenote swim.
The Belize Zoo
The Belize Zoo, founded in 1983, serves as a sanctuary for animals that have been orphaned, rescued, or donated from other zoos. Unlike traditional zoos, all of its animals are native to Belize, with a strong focus on conservation and education rather than entertainment. One of the zoo’s main attractions is the chance to see Belize’s majestic big cats up close. It’s home to jaguars, ocelots, and pumas, where visitors can observe them lounging or prowling through their enclosures. Bird lovers will also be delighted with the vibrant toucans, parrots, and macaws on display. But it’s not just big cats and birds that captivate; the zoo also features monkeys, tapirs, crocodiles, and even a few snakes. A standout exhibit is the harpy eagle, one of the largest and most powerful birds of prey. The zoo houses a breeding pair, allowing visitors to see these magnificent birds swooping through the trees. The Belize Zoo offers a variety of tours and experiences, from general admission to private tours led by a zookeeper. One of the most popular options is the “Jungle Experience,” which includes a guided tour and a special close encounter with a jaguar. Under supervision, visitors can even pet and feed the jaguar while learning fascinating insights from the zookeepers. For families with kids, the Belize Zoo is an ideal place to explore. It features educational exhibits and activities tailored to children, including a petting zoo and a playground, making it a perfect way to spend a few hours.
Blue Hole Cenote Swim
After lunch, we'll head to Blue Hole National Park for a refreshing swim in the Blue Hole cenote or to capture photos of the stunning scenery. This cenote, formed by the collapse of an underground limestone cave, offers a unique natural experience. The Blue Hole is located just a 45-minute drive from the Belize Zoo. Your guide/driver will also offer the option to stop at Country Barn Ice Cream along the Hummingbird Highway for a sweet treat.
